TMI: An Unexpected Windfall and Planning For What’s Next
The Million-dollar inheritance always happens to someone else until it happens to you.
The famous “Great Wealth Transfer” is already underway (and sooner than predicted). In the U.S. alone, an estimated $80 trillion+ in assets is transferring from the Silent Generation and Baby Boomers to younger generations in coming years.
For one client, an unexpected financial gift from a parent brought more than gratitude; it also raised anxieties and important questions.
What are the tax implications?
Where do their own kids fit in?
In short- how do we not blow this money?
In the client’s words: "I know how to be poor. I do not know how to be rich.”
Joe sat down with the client to review their current finances, identify their priorities, and build a plan to bridge the gap. This included paying off debt, saving for their children's education, and investing for long term growth. Creating a “bucket approach” helped them visualize the plan.
The plan Included:
· Opening and funding 529 education savings accounts for their children, which is tax-free growth on the gains until college begins
· Paying off the minimal mortgage and cars to reduce debt and interest payments which freed up cash flow
· Establishing a rainy day fund in treasury money markets for unexpected emergencies while collecting interest on the balance
· Investing in fixed income, dividend paying stocks and real estate for high current yields and low risk for money which might be needed in 3–5 years
· Investing in growth stocks for long-term 5+ years capital appreciation and inflation protection
· Opening Roth IRAs and maxing out annual contributions for long term growth and tax-free gains (2026 contribution limits are $7,500 for individuals under 50 and $8,600 for those age 50 and older)
With a plan in place, the client gained comfort and clarity about how to move forward. What initially felt overwhelming felt more like an opportunity to build for their own future.
